    Album Reviews:

“(This disc) is brilliantly eclectic and wide ranging, clearly one of the best albums I’ve heard so far in 2017.” Jim Hynes, Elmore Magazine

“The vet Australian roots rocker comes back with his first new set in way too long and it should serve to be an international career maker. A killer amalgam of 70s sounds from before MTV and AOR codified everything and there was room for something with a beating heart to break through, this set is already up for every award in it's home turf and it's easy to see why. Folk? Blues? Roots? It's all here and it sounds glorious without a pre fab note in the bunch. Well done.” Midwest Record

“Achison refines a type of emotional realism ideally tailored to his gift for songwriting. “High Wire” in particular makes a strong claim to be a minor masterpiece of conflated blues, rock and soul.” 4 Stars. Frank John-Hadley, Downbeat Magazine

High Wire 03:38
Something’s gotta blow, something’s gotta give Too many theory’s on the way I oughta live And they ain’t got time For an enquiring mind, so I’m Infatuated by the rhythm and the rhyme On a high wire Halfway between the sky and the dirt We’re all dancing on a fine, fine line Trouble on his mind, a monkey on his back That dude is headed for a heart attack Building big MacMansions Was the latest fashion But heaven knows that love has always been the answer On a high wire Halfway between the sky and the dirt We’re all dancing on a fine, fine line Any moment of any day Such a tragedy to wish it all away Just-a keep on moving Just-a keep on grooving No better seat between the solar and the lunar On a high wire Halfway between the sky and the dirt We’re all dancing on a fine, fine line © Geoff Achison 2011

Delta Dave 04:00
He tuned up his cheap Stratocaster guitar Slung it on his back, toting his battery powered amplifier He rode his bicycle to Bourke Street And he set up his equipment He played his blues For survival and to pay the rent But he’d brought food for the homeless And toys for the children Delta Dave He sang of Kansas City and Sweet Home Chicago So far away His voice was but a whisper but his heart was like a mountain Delta Dave And he cast no judgment on the choices others made He was happy for a dollar from the music that he played He took what he needed and gave the rest away Delta Dave Ooh – ooh – ooh – ooh … Ooh – ooh – ooh – ooh … In July of ’99 I guess he figured it was time He took one last ride to that big blues gig in the sky And The Age ran a story about an angelic man Who’d tried to cure the city’s ills with his gypsy blues band And the hardened & the helpless wrote his eulogy in chalk On the steps of his stage on the Swanston Street walk And they venerated his name in the manner of a saint And if it wasn’t too much … it was a little too late Delta Dave Ooh – ooh – ooh – ooh … Ooh – ooh – ooh – ooh … © Geoff Achison April 22, 2015

I’m just working my way back home I’m just working my way back home I ain’t ever been there before Working my way back home Was it there in the music they played Was it there in a lover’s embrace This place that I’m searching for Working my way back home With every little move that I make With every little step that I take There’s a place that I’m searching for Working my way back home I’m just working my way back home I’m just working my way back home I ain’t ever been there before Working my way back home If my spirit should rise to the sky I’m preparing the whole of my life There’s a place that I’m searching for Working my way back home © Geoff Achison 2012

I ain’t gonna play it your way I want no part of this dirty game ‘I know the deal’ said the Ace to the Knave ‘This deck is stacked, and you’re two faced’ Now I’m gonna ride I’m gonna pack up this broken home I’m gonna ride away from here I ain’t gonna grant you the high Of being the one on whom I’ve come to rely I’ll you something, that won’t mystify If you see my ass, I’ll be waving bye-bye Now I’m gonna ride I’m gonna pack up this broken home I’m gonna ride away from here I’m gonna leave all the things I don’t need I’ll lock the doors and the windows, and mail you back the keys This situation is one I can’t win Either you’re turning me down or you’re turning me in Now I’m gonna ride I’m gonna pack up this broken home I’m gonna ride away from here © Geoff Achison Mar 2013

Well I quit my drinking I gave up those cigarettes I’ve even stopped my cussing baby And placing football bets I ain’t looking at women if you know what I mean And I ain’t been high Since I don’t know when Well, I need a new bad habit now I need a new bad habit now I need a new … bad habit Yeah I’m as clean as a whistle now I’ve got the healthy routine I part my hair in the middle I iron a crease in my jeans And I’m ready to party So long as I’m home by ten I’ll be sipping on mineral water Snacking on an aubergine I need a new bad habit now Just some fix to make my brain go ‘wow’ I need a new … bad habit So I’m on the straight and narrow But I’m still a rebel inside I snuck a whole processed sugar cube Into my herbal tea last night I was double-dipping In the chicken-liver pate I whipped my smart phone out at the dinner And I sat there checking my Facebook page I need a new bad habit now Got to get that buzz baby but I don’t know how I need a new … bad habit © Geoff Achison 2013

When I woke up this morning Raging fire in my head Splashing water on my face Shaking whiskey from my brain I couldn’t face my breakfast Bring me coffee instead I’m just searching for a remedy To kill these blues stone dead Baby I I wish you were mine Baby I I wish you were mine I used to be an honest man But now I’m lying to myself As if there’s hope when the one you love Has moved on with someone else So I’ve got to hit the highway baby I’ll try to find some peace of mind Now I’ve left my heart at the Waffle House On exit one twenty-nine © Geoff Achison 2015

I can’t drive another mile I can’t wait another minute I want to turn this thing around But I’d let the whole team down Lose all the gained ground Cut my heart right down the middle I made a promise and I meant it One perfect moment kept for ever I can hardly remember the words Or the voices I heard I was looking into your eyes Baby I was mesmerised In my heart I won’t forget it Another day and I can’t stop thinking about you Another day and I can’t stop thinking about you I sat down on the edge of my bed Staring at the walls of this Super 8 motel Black Dog howlin’ trying to to deepen my despair But I just flipped open the catch on my guitar case I can’t drive another mile I can’t wait another minute © Geoff Achison 2015

I have heard of a ledger Kept at the pearly gates Who goes in and who stays out Is what the ledger says Well I know that I knew better In my earthly livin’ days These marks against my name But if I’d seen what I’ve seen Before I saw it happening If I knew what I know Before I learned from what I did I could have anticipated Every unexpected twist of fate These marks against my name Bargaining with the saint If I could live my whole life over Make no mistake I’d make no mistake I guess I should have seen it coming And got some spiritual advice But I never sought enlightenment Until this afterlife Now I’m hoping that the overseer Makes an oversight Wringing my hands in vain Bargaining with the saint If I could live my whole life over Make no mistake I’d make no mistake Mishap and circumstance Have led to my disgrace Now won’t you give me one more chance? Just let me keep my hindsight alive But if I’d seen what I’ve seen Before I saw it happening If I knew what I know Before I learned from what I did I could have anticipated Every unexpected twist of fate These marks against my name Bargaining with the saint © Geoff Achison 2009

I tried to leave my baby But I just can’t break away My evil hearted angel Bewitched I’m like a slave Like smoke up from the ashes This ghost has lost his way Ooh-ooh Ooh-ooh The only crime here is escape So tired of dreaming I’m awake Awoken and I’m broken To sleep is all I crave And I rage without reason And I cry without shame Ooh-ooh Ooh-ooh The only crime here is escape So tired of dreaming I’m awake The only crime here is escape So tired of dreaming I’m awake The only crime here is escape So tired of dreaming I’m awake The only crime here is escape So tired of dreaming I’m awake © Geoff Achison 2013

Way back in ancient history When the world had just begun Some people got the gift of the gab Some people got a fix of the fab And some people got all da fonk I just wanna be that smooth I just wanna feel that groove I just wanna hit the dance floor And maybe even bust a move But I can count from one to four And I can count from four to one But I just can’t get that fonk Some People have all the fun Some peoples got all da fonk (x2) Ya lay the downbeat on the one Set the groove with the bass and drum Tune into that other place And get your inner munky goin’ on We tried to analyse it Down at the iFonk lab We even tried to synthesise it I got a little smart phone app I got the riffs from a website link I tried to think like a fonkster thinks But I still ain’t got that fonk Some People have all the fun Some peoples got all da fonk (x2) *** INST *** Talk about, Larry Graham & Bootsy Collins Professor Longhair and Dr John Ya getting’ up when they get on down Ya getting’ off when they get it on So I went down to Louisiana To the city of New Orleans Workin’ out on the old piano I heard the spaces in between See you could count from one to four And you could count from four to one But you’ve just got to feel that funk Some People have all the fun Some peoples got all da fonk (x2) © Geoff Achison 2011

Well down town last night I was walking by myself I started thinking about this girl I used to have Well I remembered her smile and the way she used to laugh I could remember the little ring on her hand You see I came to this town like a two-bob bum I had the ass hanging out of my jeans She took me in and turned me right around I was like the sharpest looking cat you’ve ever seen I remember I was in love and it was alright I’ve been down and out, I’ve been run out of town Sometimes I’ve been kicked around and I felt like a fool but since my baby leaving well I can’t deal with the feeling Man it’s cold but it sure ain’t cool I remember I was in love and it was alright But now I can’t eat, I can’t sleep Baby come back I ain’t complete and I can’t compete Baby come back Baby come back Come back baby Baby please come back Well it’s a sad situation when you can’t get to facing losing somebody And all the time you thought she was depending on you! She walks out and makes a brand new life for herself While you sit by the phone hoping she’ll call one afternoon I remember I was in love and it was alright But now I can’t eat, I can’t sleep Baby come back I ain’t complete and I can’t compete Baby come back Baby come back Come back baby Baby please come back Now I've been crying on the phone I've been crying all alone I've been thinking about you baby I can't live without you baby You see I can’t eat, I can’t sleep Baby please come back © Geoff Achison 1991

I Need Help 04:00
I opened the door and I stepped right in They said “Sit down and relax now” They said, “Tell us the problems that you’ve been having And we’ll try to sort it out now” I said “Well how this all started I just don’t know But this woman drives me crazy. I get to pawing at the ground And I howl at the moon But I just can’t keep away.” If she’s the beauty and I am the beast If she’s an angel I’m in trouble deep And I should be ashamed but I just can’t abstain I need help now They said “It’s a curious problem but we’ve seen this before It’s just infatuation. But you’ve brought this on yourself and you seem beyond help. That’s our evaluation.” I said “No, you don’t understand, I’m a fine upstanding man Nearly all of the time. It’s just that I get these horns in my head and I start wagging my tail Any time she walks on by.” If she’s the beauty and I am the beast If she’s an angel I’m in trouble deep And I should be ashamed but I just can’t abstain I need help now © Geoff Achison 2014

Mmmm … I’m gonna make my stand someday Mmmm … I’m gonna make my stand someday I don’t know if the sky may fall I don’t know if the rain might pour But I can feel the earth shakin’ now And I’m afraid to die Before my time Mmmm … I’m gonna make my stand someday Mmmm … I’m gonna make my stand someday I don’t know if the stars align I don’t know if this fate is mine But I can feel the earth quakin’ now And I’m afraid to die Before my time © Geoff Achison 2015
